About Murmurs

Murmurs started with a specific and fairly unglamorous problem: you get cold sitting still.

Desk work means holding one position for hours, and thermostats — at home and in offices — are set for people who are moving around. The usual fixes don't survive contact with an actual working day. A throw blanket slides off the moment you reach for the keyboard. A coat indoors is bulky and makes it look like you're leaving. A cardigan does the job but rarely feels like anything.

So we made the piece we wanted at our own desks. Cut to stay on the shoulders without being held there. Open enough to leave your arms and hands completely free. Composed enough that you don't have to take it off when a call turns into a video call.

The point was never to be cozy for its own sake — it was to remove one small, constant distraction so you can stay in what you're doing. That the same piece works on a sofa, on a train, or over a coat in October is the part we like most.

Yes. We work with hotels, studios, offices and gifting programs. Visit our Partnerships page or email us with your organization, quantities and timeline.

Email us at murmurs@unmutee.co or use the contact form on our Contact page — either reaches the same inbox, and we reply within 2–3 business days. If you're writing about an existing order, include your order number.

Materials & Craft

Every piece lists its full fiber composition under Materials & Care on its product page — that's always the definitive source. Across the current range: the Drift cape is 90% lambswool and 10% cashmere, the Murmur cape is a baby camel hair and wool blend, and the Lilt blanket is a lambswool and cashmere blend. We choose each blend for how it behaves in use — warmth, drape, resilience, and how it wears over years rather than seasons.

Lambswool comes from a sheep's first shearing. It's finer, softer and springier than standard wool, and it gives a piece structure and breathable warmth. Cashmere comes from the undercoat of cashmere goats — the fibers are far finer, so even a small percentage adds noticeable softness and drape. Baby camel hair comes from the soft underlayer of young camels; it's exceptionally light for the warmth it holds, with a subtle matte luster. We blend rather than use single fibers because the combination gives softness without losing shape.

The prickle most people associate with wool comes from coarse fiber diameter, not from wool itself. Lambswool is finer than standard sheep's wool, and we blend it with cashmere or camel hair to soften the hand further. Most people who find ordinary wool sweaters uncomfortable are fine with these. Wool sensitivity does vary, though — if you have a diagnosed wool allergy, this isn't the right fabric for you.

Many of our pieces are made by hand in small batches — each product page tells you how that particular piece was produced. Where a piece is handmade, expect slight variation between individual items in texture, weave density, color depth and finished dimensions. That's a characteristic of the process rather than a defect. If something looks like an actual flaw rather than natural variation, send us a photo and we'll take a look.

Designed in the United States and made in China.

Our pieces are produced by mills in China, which has been the center of the world's cashmere and camel hair trade for generations — the large majority of the world's raw cashmere and camel hair originates and is processed in the region. For these particular fibers, that's where the material and the expertise are.

Closely, but not perfectly. Screen calibration varies between devices, and natural fibers take dye with slight batch-to-batch variation. Because our return policy doesn't cover returns for color preference, we'd rather over-communicate up front — message us before ordering and we'll describe the shade honestly, including how it reads in daylight versus indoor light.

Sizing & Wear

One size, intentionally oversized. Dimensions for each piece are listed on its product page under Fit. The cut is designed to sit across the shoulders, layer over a sweater or coat, or fold down compactly for travel — and it suits all genders and body types.

The capes are cut and sized to be worn — across the shoulders, over a coat, or wrapped for travel. The blankets are sized for a sofa, a chair, or across your lap at a desk. Plenty of customers use them interchangeably. If you want one piece that does both, start with a cape.

Yes. Folded lengthwise, it works as an oversized scarf. Open across the shoulders, it reads as a cape. It's the same piece either way.

These are built for transitional weather, layering, and indoor warmth rather than as a replacement for winter outerwear. Worn over a coat, or indoors at a desk or on a sofa, they're substantial. Of our blends, baby camel hair (Murmur) holds the most warmth for its weight.

No. Wool is breathable and regulates rather than simply insulating, which is why these work at a desk in an over-air-conditioned office in summer as well as on a sofa in January.

Care

Dry cleaning is recommended for most pieces. Avoid hanging for long periods — wool stretches under its own weight — so fold and store flat instead.

No. Machine washing wool and cashmere can cause irreversible felting and shrinkage, and a washed item is no longer returnable. If your piece needs freshening rather than cleaning, air it out for a few hours somewhere dry and out of direct sun; wool sheds odors remarkably well on its own.

Blot — don't rub — with a clean, damp white cloth as soon as you can, working from the outside of the spot inward so you don't spread it. Let it air dry flat, away from radiators or direct heat. For anything oil-based or already set in, take it to a dry cleaner rather than experimenting.

No. Some pilling in the first few weeks is normal for natural fibers — it's short fibers working their way out of the weave, and it reduces significantly after the first season. Remove pills gently with a cashmere comb or fabric shaver. Don't pull them off by hand, which can draw out the longer fibers.

Clean it first — moths are drawn to body oils and food traces, not to clean wool. Then fold it and store it in a breathable cotton bag rather than plastic, which traps moisture. Cedar or lavender in the storage space helps.

Lightly, at first, and mostly with the camel hair and cashmere blends. It settles down after the first few wears. A quick pass with a lint roller handles it.

Shipping

Shipping is free on every US order — no minimum, no threshold, nothing to calculate at checkout.

Orders are processed within 3–4 business days, then travel 3–4 business days in transit — so expect your order roughly 6–8 business days after you place it, depending on how far it has to go. Processing takes longer during product launches and peak season. If anything is running behind, we'll email you with a revised estimate, and you can cancel for a full refund if the new timing doesn't work for you.

Yes — expedited and overnight options are available at checkout, priced by your address and the weight of your order.

One thing worth knowing: faster shipping shortens the transit leg only. Every order still goes through processing first, so an overnight order arrives in about 3 business days rather than the next day.

The United States only for now: the continental US, plus Alaska, Hawaii and US territories. Deliveries to Alaska, Hawaii and territories take longer than the standard estimate. We aren't shipping internationally yet — join our newsletter and you'll hear as soon as that changes.

Once your order is handed to the carrier you'll get a shipping confirmation email with a tracking number and link. If it hasn't arrived within a few hours of your shipping notification, check your spam folder before contacting us.

Check with neighbors, building staff, and around entryways first — carriers occasionally scan early or leave parcels out of sight. If it doesn't turn up, contact the carrier to open a claim, since they hold the delivery scan data and GPS record. Let us know at the same time and we'll help push it along. We can't take responsibility for packages the carrier confirms as delivered to the address on the order.

Photograph the box and the contents before unpacking any further, then email us within 7 days of delivery with the photos and your order number. We'll file the claim with the carrier and arrange a replacement or refund. If the box is visibly destroyed on arrival, you can also refuse it from the carrier outright.

Returns & Refunds

We accept returns within 14 days of delivery when something has gone wrong on our end — you received the wrong item or color, the piece differs materially from the dimensions or fiber content listed on its product page, or it arrived damaged or defective. In all of those cases, we cover return shipping and send you a prepaid label.

We don't accept returns for change of mind or personal preference. More on that below.

No, and we want to be upfront about it rather than have you find out afterward.

The honest reason: we make in small batches, and a returned piece can't go back into stock the way it can at a large retailer. Absorbing that cost isn't something a brand our size can do and keep making things this way.

What we'd ask instead is that you use us before you order. Tell us your height and build and we'll say how a piece will sit. Ask about a shade, and we'll describe how it reads in daylight versus lamplight. Ask how the lambswool blend compares to the camel hair and we'll tell you which we'd choose and why — including when the answer is "neither, wait for the next drop." We'd rather lose a sale than have you keep something you don't love.

Discounted items, items marked Final Sale, customized or made-to-order pieces, limited-edition products, and gift cards. Any item bought at a reduced price — including with a discount code — is final sale.

To be clear about what that means: final sale means we can't accept a return for change of mind or preference. If a final-sale piece arrives damaged, defective, or isn't what you ordered, it's always covered. A discount doesn't change our responsibility for getting your order right.

We do. Because the only returns we accept are ones where something went wrong on our end, you're never out of pocket for our mistake — we send a prepaid label with your return instructions.

We inspect returns within 3 business days of receiving them and let you know the outcome. Approved refunds are returned to your original payment method within 7 business days for the price of the item. Standard shipping is free on every order, so there's nothing to refund there — and if you chose expedited or overnight delivery, that fee isn't refundable, since it covers a delivery service that was already performed. The one exception is when we sent the wrong item — you paid to receive something quickly and didn't get it, so we refund the shipping too. Depending on your bank, it can take a few days longer to appear.

Not for a different color or piece, since we don't accept change-of-mind returns. If we sent you the wrong item, that isn't an exchange — it's our error, and we'll ship the correct piece and collect the other at our cost.

Two situations, handled slightly differently.

Damaged in transit — photograph the outer box and contents before unpacking further, and email us within 7 days of delivery. If a box arrives visibly destroyed, you can refuse it from the carrier.

A manufacturing fault that shows up with normal use — a seam failing, unexpected dye transfer during recommended cleaning — email us within 30 days with photos. Past 30 days, write to us anyway. We look at these individually, and we're not hunting for reasons to say no.

Either way we'll offer a replacement, refund or store credit, and return shipping is on us.

Not usually. On handmade pieces, small variations in texture, color depth and size are inherent to the process rather than faults — your product page notes how the piece was made. If you're unsure which you're looking at, send us a photo and we'll tell you honestly.

Orders & Payment

Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Diners Club, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay.

Contact us as soon as possible. Because orders take 3–4 business days to process, there's usually a comfortable window to catch one before it's packed — including changing the delivery address. Once an order has been handed to the carrier we can't recall it.

Not at the moment. Every order ships in a fabric bag and tissue inside the outer shipping box, so it arrives presentation-ready as is — most pieces don't need anything added.

Sometimes, but not always — small-batch production means certain colorways don't return. Sign up for our newsletter or follow us on Instagram for restocks and new drops.

No — Murmurs is online only, and everything ships direct from us. If that ever changes, our newsletter subscribers will be the first to know.
